








Finding Beauty in the Mundane: Documentary Family Photography (Nov 15-Dec 20)

Documentary family photography is an art form that seeks the extraordinary in the ordinary, turning fleeting moments into timeless narratives. It's a testament to the fact that beauty and storytelling power reside in the most common of places: our homes, our routines, and our interactions. In this course, students will explore the principles of documentary photography, with a specific focus on how to apply these principles to family settings to create compelling, candid, and emotionally resonant images. This immersive course is designed for photographers of all levels who aspire to capture the profound and often overlooked beauty in everyday family life. Objectives:
Develop an understanding of the documentary photography genre, with an emphasis on family narratives
Cultivate an eye for detail and an appreciation for the stories that unfold in everyday life
Create genuine, heartfelt images telling authentic stories of families in their environments
Master technical skills for photographing in various home environments, often with challenging lighting and fast-moving subjects
Enhance storytelling abilities through composition, timing, and perspective
Acquire photo editing skills to enhance the narrative quality of the images without compromising their authenticity
Create a personal documentary family photography project showcasing your individual style and storytelling
Prerequisites:
Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode and having a basic understanding of photo editing tools
Course Prep:
For those with previous work, please compile an edit of your past documentary family photography work.
