Candid City: Introduction to Street Photography (Oct 23-Nov 20)

Meetings: Thursdays, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM CST (5 sessions)

Location: Houston Center for Photography

Cost: $490 (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Skill Level: Intermediate

In this introductory street photography class, students learn the secrets of finding the perfect light, crafting dynamic compositions, and identifying decisive moments. Dive into the intricacies of spotting interesting characters that add depth to your visual narratives. This course provides a holistic approach to street photography, fostering not just the development of skills and technical proficiency, but also an appreciation for ethical considerations that come with documenting diverse environments in the world around us. Learn to navigate public spaces with sensitivity and create impactful images while maintaining a genuine connection with your subjects. Whether you're a beginner or an enthusiast, elevate your photography to a new level as you practice both the technical and interpersonal aspects of this dynamic and immersive art form.

Objectives:

  • Learn to identify decisive moments in evolving situations 

  • Improve your technical proficiency in adapting to fast-changing environments

  • Practice lighting techniques and how to perfect your compositions 

  • Discuss and understand the complexities related to documenting characters

  • Review ethical considerations for respectful interactions in public spaces

  • Sharpen your cultural sensitivity while photographing diverse communities

  • Develop your personal portfolio by adding exciting new images

Prerequisites: 

Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in Manual mode. This course is for DSLR or mirrorless camera users, not for smartphone photography. Students should be able to select and send pictures for weekly critiques in class. Familiarity with Adobe Lightroom is a plus.

Course Prep: 

For the first class, students should bring 5-10 pictures representing their work (preferably related to street photography but not a must). In addition, please bring 3-5 pictures of your favorite street photographer and be ready to explain what you like about their imagery.
