Location: Alana Campbell’s Studio

Cost: $250 Tuition + $50 Materials (HCP members can receive a 10% discount)

Instructor: Alana Campbell

Skill Level: Intermediate

Dance photography is a field that offers creative opportunities for those who have interest in photographing lighting and movement, can anticipate the flow of the dance, and can communicate effectively with dancers. This class introduces students to the magical and diverse world of dance photography while combining guided demonstrations and practice in a studio environment. Participants will gain hands-on experience using essential lighting techniques and set-ups that include professional strobes and continuous lighting while working with professional dancers. Students will create a set of conceptual studio images using costumes, staging, and mixed lighting. Additional topics include: lighting styles, communication, costuming, posing, concept building, and recommended studio gear.

Objectives:

  • Explore the world of dance photography in its various forms (street, studio, performance)

  • Receive detailed live demonstrations and dive deeper into studio dance photography

  • Practice using available studio equipment in live photoshoots with models

  • Develop your sensitivities to how light hits the body using continuous lights

  • Learn how to capture the right moment and which poses are more successful than others

  • Understand how to configure the lighting alongside the pose (continuous vs strobe)

  • Communicate effectively with models and dancers to achieve the results you aim for

Prerequisites:

Photography I or being comfortable using your camera in manual mode. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One is a plus.
