Photographing Holiday Lights: Tips and Tricks (Nov 15)

Meeting: Saturday, 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM CST

Location: Online Zoom Classroom

Have you ever wondered how to photograph your holiday decorations without accidental and distracting motion blur or strange color casts from different types of light sources? This delightful, holiday-themed workshop will provide students with the tools and knowledge needed to photograph holiday lights and decorations effectively and creatively. We will cover the basics of how a camera works and ensure an understanding of white balance and shutter speed. Students will learn to utilize long exposure to thoughtfully and intentionally capture motion. Students will leave knowing how to set up their DSLR, mirrorless camera, and/or smartphone camera to capture sharp, crisp, and whimsical photographs of holiday lights, candles, and decorations.

Objectives:

  • Understand how ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture work together to expose a photograph

  • Control the color of light in your images using the white balance setting on the camera 

  • Review examples of white balance settings in the context of photographing holiday lights 

  • Be able to adjust your settings to successfully photograph both LED and incandescent lights 

  • Use  the “blue hour” to creatively photograph landscapes with holiday lights

  • Be introduced to fun accessories that can add effects to photographs

  • Receive advice and tips on how to photograph your family, loved ones, and decorations during the holidays 

Prerequisites: None

Course Prep: 

Please be ready to take notes during the workshop. Students are welcome to bring their cameras if they want to ask specific questions during the class.
